Depression? Anxiety? Massage Therapy Can Help!

SSOR offers massage therapy in both the Prairie Village and Overland Park locations.  While you have many choices for massage therapy, SSOR should be your first choice because who better to compliment your massage therapist than a physical therapist to help you get to the source of your aches and pains.  But can massage therapy help your anxiety? Can it help depression? The answer to both is a resounding “Yes!”

Massage Therapy for Depression and Anxiety

When suffering from anxiety or depression, living life seems to become more of a task then a gift.  Research shows that massage therapy helps alleviate the chronic symptoms one might experience in daily life.  The Touch Research Institute at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine conducted a study of 500 individuals ranging from men, women, and children who suffer from depression or anxiety.  The study showed that the levels of cortisol (stress hormone) in the participant after receiving a massage lower the levels by up to 53%.  Cortisol does not just allow us to feel stress; cortisol also drives up blood pressure, decreases heart rate, effects blood sugar, and suppresses the immune system.  Massage therapy affects the body’s biochemistry, not only by lowering cortisol levels but also by increasing the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which are the body’s natural stress reducers.  Living with anxiety, the body is constantly in the sympathetic nervous response of “fight or flight,” which increases heart rate and breathing, along with constricting blood vessels and tightening muscles.  Regular massage therapy will help alleviate the constant stress your body is undergoing by releasing “good” neurotransmitters and relieving the physical muscle strain.
Massage therapy is offered in Overland Park on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:00am-5:00pm and in Prairie Village on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am-3pm.  Give us a call, it would be a privilege to serve you!
