How to stay active at work by changing your diet

Staying Active at Work

Standing desks. Hourly stretches. Going to see people in person rather than sending an email. There are many ways to stay active even when you’re at work.

One of the easiest ways to stay active at work is to change what you’re eating while you’re there. Poor eating habits can lead to increased inflammation and pain. In turn, these issues can make it harder for you to get through all your daily work tasks. Luckily, there are three dietary changes you can make that can help you keep active at work.

  1. Reduce your caffeinated beverage intake

Many people think that caffeinated beverages can help them stay active at work. However, they can also have the opposite effect. Specifically, caffeine can alter your body’s pH balance, resulting in an increase in acidity. This increases inflammation, which can lead to pain that keeps you from moving around at work.

  1. Don’t eat too many sweets

Staying active at work is also easier if you cut down on sweets. Sugar, for example, causes your body’s insulin levels to spike and thus makes you even more sensitive to pain. Aspartame has a similar effect on the body. This means you should avoid any foods and beverages with added sugars and artificial sweeteners, including diet sodas. Even some seemingly healthy fruit juices have sugar added, so it’s important to avoid them.

  1. Stay hydrated — Perhaps one of the best ways to stay more active at work is to simply drink more water. If you’re the type of person who drinks a lot of juices, sodas, and other questionable beverages, you may be amazed at how much better you feel just by switching to water. That’s because water can help flush toxins out of your body, which can in turn reduce pain caused by inflammation. Unfortunately, nearly 80% of working Americans report that they don’t drink enough water.
