What to do for neck pain

Neck Pain Treatment

Neck pain is a common part of life, but there’s more you can do to prevent it than you may realize. Sometimes, you need to see a medical professional to treat neck pain, but often, some simple changes in lifestyle can reduce and prevent neck pain.

Here are a few things you can start doing now to improve the condition of your neck:

Stretch your neck muscles

Weak and stiff muscles and soft tissue in the neck are one of the primary reasons you have neck pain. Muscles and soft tissue in these conditions cannot provide adequate support for the cervical spine (the part of the spine in your neck) and your head. This means there is more pressure on the spine for support, which often leads to pain and decreased range of motion.

Doing some simple stretches every day can help reduce neck pain and prevent future neck pain from developing. Try some head rolls and shoulder rotations. Talk to a physical therapist for assistance in identifying exercises more specific to your needs.

Get better rest

The way you sleep has a big impact on the way your neck feels the rest of the day after you wake up. If you notice your neck is frequently sore, especially after you wake up, you may want to change the position in which you sleep.

Avoid sleeping on your back. This puts a lot of pressure on your neck and spine. Try sleeping on your side or back instead. Use a pillow that allows your spine to remain in a straight line. Pillows that are too thick or thin cause the spine to bend and puts pressure on your neck.

Sit with better posture

Another major reason people have neck pain is sitting with poor posture. When sitting at a desk, people often hunch their heads down, which puts a lot of pressure on the muscles and soft tissue in the neck.

Sit with your head held high. Bring the ears parallel with the shoulders and try not to slouch your shoulders. If you use a computer monitor for work or study, bring the screen to a position more level with your eyes so you don’t have to look down as much.
