According to the National Floor Safety Institute, 1 of every 3 people each year in the United States over the age of 65 will experience a fall. Many of these falls will result in injuries, including fractures to the leg or hip, ankle or other sprains, and head injuries such as concussions. While some of these injuries may be minor, some could lead to chronic pain and a loss of mobility. In elderly adults, a fall can also lead to a loss of independence.
What causes slip, trip and fall injuries?
There are many factors that could lead to someone being injured in a slip or fall. Many falls can be avoided by observing proper safety precautions at home or in the workplace. However, some people may be more at risk from slips, trips and falls than others. Here are five common causes of slip, trip and fall injuries:
- Trip hazards in the home or workplace — Something as simple as uneven flooring, broken steps, or household clutter can cause someone to unexpectedly trip and fall. It’s important to keep walkways clear and keep an eye out for necessary repairs.
- Weather conditions — Snow, ice, sleet, and heavy rain can all cause outdoor surfaces to become slippery and dangerous. Indoor surfaces are also at risk, as snow and water can be tracked inside. Avoid walking on wet or frozen surfaces whenever possible, and clean up any water that finds its way inside.
- Improper footwear — Uncomfortable or ill-fitting shoes are a common cause for slipping and falling accidents. Make sure that your footwear is appropriate for the area you are walking in, and replace shoes that are too worn out or falling apart.
- Vestibular conditions — Some people suffer from conditions that cause them to easily lose their balance. The inner ear and parts of the brain, known as the vestibular system, are responsible for helping us maintain our balance. Infection, disorders, or damage to this area can cause dizziness, vertigo, and a lack of coordination, often leading to a fall.
- Side effects of medication — Many people, including adults over 65, take one or more medications to manage their health. Unfortunately, some of the side effects of certain medications can include dizziness, blurred vision and vertigo, all of which can cause someone to slip, trip and fall.
