Two physical therapy methods that can treat vertigo

Vertigo Treatment

Vertigo can be caused by a variety of conditions, but it is typically characterized by a spinning sensation, lightheadedness and dizziness. You may even experience double vision with it. It can be due to migraines, inner ear infections, head injuries, tumors and stroke. However, most vertigo involves a problem with the vestibular system: the inner ear.

One of the most common types of vertigo is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), which is an inner-ear problem. It’s reported that about 3% of Americans will experience BPPV in their lifetime. Physical therapists can help you find treatment for vertigo caused by BPPV and other issues; there are two therapy methods that can be especially helpful with this condition.

These two therapy techniques can help treat BPPV-related vertigo

Physical therapy is an effective treatment for vertigo caused by BPPV. Your physical therapist will start your treatment by performing tests to determine its cause. You may also be asked questions about:

  • How long the vertigo lasts
  • When it first started
  • If you have nausea with the spinning
  • What you’re doing when you experience vertigo

The goal of your physical therapist is to eliminate the symptoms of vertigo and get you moving again. Physical therapy for vertigo can take many forms, but it’s most likely to include:

  1. Canalith repositioning exercises — Otoconia are the calcium carbonate crystals that break loose and lead to vertigo and other BPPV symptoms. Canalith repositioning exercises (CREs) are designed to remove otoconia from the area of the inner ear where they can cause vertigo. Studies report that CREs have a success rate of 95% when used in just one or two therapy sessions.
  1. Gaze stabilization training — BPPV patients often have trouble focusing their eyes while experiencing vertigo. This can make it easier to trip or fall, which can lead to serious injuries. Your physical therapist can help improve your stability with gaze stabilization training (GST). This involves looking at a fixed object while moving your head in various directions. Medical studies reveal that 90% of patients who used GST had a significant improvement in fall risk.
